RIP

Sadly, tonight one of the best parts of Louisiana history, the lovely Blaze Starr, has gone on to the burlesque stage in the sky.

ash wednesday matches

This morning I noticed on one of the countless "dating" apps I've downloaded, (ahem) there was "match" feature. Huh?
I'd somehow never noticed this before.

Anyway, because I'm bored desperate, I started swiping. swiping past the shirtless bicep show-offs, past the "gaymers" (a word that pains my hands to write), past the "partnered".....way past the "married".

And suddenly I see the face of a guy I recognize.
No, not like that.
I recognize it as the friend of a friend of mine.

I know the face because I've seen this very picture in the paper...
murdered sometime last year.

Below his smiling face, the green and red buttons ask if I'd like to "meet" or "pass".
I'm not sure which.
I say a tiny prayer for him ....and push "pass"....
onto someone who frankly needs the prayers even more.

(I'm talking a headless leather harness with a Taylor Swift reference, people. For realz)

meet my new friends

Once upon a time I had some fish.
I had a black molly and a white one.
So I named them Othello and Desdemona.
That was a bad idea.
Othello ate Desdemona.
But that was ten years ago.
Things will be different now, right?

My new little fish are much humbler sort...and less aggressive.

I like to think they're in love.

Now they need names. Thus far, here are some of my ideas:

a.Abelard and Heloise
b.Paolo and Francesca
c.Kim and Kanye
d.Tristan und Isolde
e.Liz and Dick

let's go for a walk!

Yesterday, some friends and I took a little walk to the record store.

(why yes, you did read that right. And yes, it is 2014.

I think.)

Anywho, like any such quixotic quest, it was absolutely fraught with danger.

Walking through Bywater on a beautiful Sunday afternoon, addled by one too many bloody marys, we seemed to encounter horror after horror:

Rudolph prepared for a Christmas sacrifice.
The cactus of the severed heads of Santa

Scary Claus

Something scarier still.  You just know she's the mastermind behind Rudolph's death.
Thank Santa for small miracles

And big cocks

God speed, sweet Jan

I don't know about you all, but how I loved me some Jan Hooks! Truly saddened to hear about her passing today. I'd been wondering where she was just not long ago. Here's just one of my favorite characters of hers:

Is it June yet?

Why hi there!
 Yes, I am still alive....sorta.
How about y'all?

Where've I been, you ask? (ok, so maybe you don't)
Well, I've been working all too much....and being sick all too much....and being a little blue all too much too.
ahem

Oh, and for spring break I took a little trip to Cancun (by which I mean, of course, the hospital).

Yeah, like any good Victorian lady last week I clean passed out....and me without my smelling salts.... and had to be rushed to the ER.
Not to brag, but I do have a flair for the dramatic.

A million tests later, no real cause was found for my vertigo, other than my near fatal blood pressure and the residual effects of the pneumonia I had had a while back.   I'm now quite doped up on a small fortune of medicines which aren't even that much fun.  But I'm alive, so there's that.

Naked Centennial

Today is the 100th birthday of William S. Burroughs

I'm reminded of this fact, by the always fascinating site Band of Thebes, who give an overview of his queer-ness (is that a word?)

I've only read one of his books, I'm ashamed to say, the late The Western Lands, and didn't much take to it, and try as I might, I've never been able to get through Naked Lunch
 Maybe one day.
(but I doubt it)
Seems back in the late 40's he and his wife Joan (you know, the one he shot in the forehead playing "William Tell") moved to Algiers.
Just a bit of time on the Westbank can do that to a person. Neal Cassady and Kerouac visited him here, so it seems.
Anywho... on a lark, a few weeks ago I made something of a pilgrimage.  I drove down through the hood and out again....to find his former home. I'd long meant to, but never had gotten around to it, even as near as it is.

It's in a quiet, very off-the-beaten-path neighborhood in the suburbs, only a short distance from where I grew up, in fact.

check, please.

Such a lovely way to end a meal.

(pen handed to me with the bill the other day)

The tacos were delicious.

omen

What can it mean when you come home to find a switchblade
ominously perched at your threshold?

(a free knife for me, that's what.)

Swantegic advertising

Every other time I visit facebook, their ever omniscient robots keep posting this ad just for me, so I can't miss it.

OMG, nothing will ruin a day like an early morning ad for "gynecomastia correction".

Clearly the internet gods are trying to tell me something.

ahem

Of course I can't help but wonder if it's the same prestigious Swan Center for Low Self Esteem that we all remember so fondly:

Frankly, I wish I could get ads fromThe Miss Swan Center. How come those robots can't figure that out?

Sometimes, briefly....

I forget I live in Louisiana. Until the daily monsoons and dead snakes in the theater parking lot remind me again.
