Miss Clairol

Just this morning I was waylaid by the clickbait headline I stumbled across:
"The First Black Trans Model Had Her Face on a Box of Clairol"

I dare you not to read.
Well, I know I couldn't help it.  It turned out to be the fascinating
story of one "Tracey Norman"...
 (by Jada Yuen and Aaron Wong)...and it made me late for work.
It was still worth it.

 Here's the first paragraph:

"Tracey “Africa” Norman always knew that the question wasn’t if she’d be found out, but how long she could go undetected.
To be black and from Newark in the mid-1970s and get plucked from a model casting call for Italian Vogue by Irving Penn — it was the kind of success story that was unheard of, especially for someone like her. She was signed by a top agency, photographed multiple times for the pages of Essence magazine. She landed an exclusive contract for Avon skin care, and another for Clairol’s Born Beautiful hair color boxes: No. 512, Dark Auburn, please. She went to Paris and became a house model in the Balenciaga showroom, wearing couture and walking the runway twice a day. Norman was never as big as Iman, Beverly Johnson, Pat Cleveland, or the other models of color breaking barriers on international runways or on the cover of Vogue. But she was riding that wave. It was more than she could have ever hoped for when she was a kid in New Jersey. Back when she was a boy who knew that, inside, he was a girl."

Marriage!

This is a wonderful day!

And my first thought is joy, especially for the couples I know.
I think of people like Edie and Thea.   This here is real love, people.

But maybe I'm just greedy, I just hope it leads to something more.
I mean I can't help but think about the rest of the world. So many people are in danger of death for being gay.
I feel like a Debbie Downer even writing this, but it weighs on my mind whenever gay marriage is mentioned.

Of course, more petty of me is the fact that if I were to get married, I'd be promptly fired.  Somehow that's still legal.

Even more pettily, ain't nobody wanting to date me around here....let alone marry me.
ahem
But I digress..

I'm happy for the explosion of rainbows and expressions of love all over the internet today.
 I just hope it's the beginning of more.

RIP

Sadly, tonight one of the best parts of Louisiana history, the lovely Blaze Starr, has gone on to the burlesque stage in the sky.

If You Were Born Today

Today I stumbled upon
 Time Magazine's "Find Out What Your Name Would Be If You Were Born Today"
name-generator
It takes the relative popularity of your name in the year you were born and matches it with a name of the same popularity for various decades.

To my horror, apparently my name today would be the abomination:
"Kayden"
 Kayden? WTF

This sounds like something one of the Kardashians is probably going to name her 3rd grandchild.

Anywho, here's a list of the other decades, none of which are terribly inspiring, but all
better than Kayden:
2000s =Mario
1990s =Hector
Hector
1980s=Reginald

1970s= Greg

1960s=Kerry

1950s=Herman
 ... Gwynne played the role of Herman Munster on the TV comedy The Munsters
1940s=Sidney

1930s=Oliver

1920s=Clifton
 Clifton Webb
1910s=Dave

1900s=Franklin
 Franklin.jpg

Thankfully, it seems my name in the1890s would be
the much sexier "Sylvester"
Yes!
At last a name I can get behind.

but this afternoon I look up and see this:

It's like a Christmas miracle, y'all!

Love will (not) keep us together

I don't know if you all have heard the terrible news yet...
but frankly I am devastated.
Devastated I tell you!
Is nothing real? Nothing true? Nothing sacred?!

Anyways, in honor of a muskrat love gone bad,
I offer you a few select pages of my very own Captain and Tennille fan book.

I found this treasure a while back at a book fair.
It was a castoff from an elementary school library.
I snatched it up for my dear friend Michael before anyone else could get their filthy hands on it.

It resides with him  now, hopefully in a crystal reliquary, illuminated by holy candles.

It was part of the "Rock'n Pop Stars" series, apparently.

I'm sure that "Charley Pride" volume must fetch top dollar on ebay, right?

Sadly, the words of this classic will taunt us forevermore with their tawdry hypocrisy:

"Sweet Lorraine"

So I just heard this story on NPR on the way home from work today....and well, next thing I know I'm tearing up like a fool.

New New Orleans News

These two news stories making the national news today seem to best encapsulate my charming hometown:

The Al Copeland Fried Chicken Memorial

"According to the Times-Picayune, the family's original proposal stated that the statue would be life-sized. It would feature Copeland holding a box of Popeyes Chicken. And a checkered racing flag. He would be standing in front of a speedboat. On top of a wishing well. On top of a pedestal. Surrounded by columns arranged in the style of an ancient Roman plaza."

"Lafreniere Park Advisory Board Chairman Ginger Crawford described the overall effect, captured by a concept artist in the illustration above (larger here), as “almost a Roman forum-type setting.” Imagine: Christians fighting lions for a piece of golden Popeyes chicken, marinated in Louisiana seasonings, then breaded in Popeyes uniquely Southern crispy coating. (Also, a speedboat.) For reasons unknown, the Lafreniere Park Board felt that the decadence and glamor of ancient Rome (plus speedboat) was “not in keeping with being complementary to the park and its master plan.”

and....

This guy in Faubourg Marigny who *should* have a memorial built to him.

poetry man

The other day I was listening to NPR   and heard a bit of Robert Frost reciting his inaugural poem for JFK.
But that's not what the story was about.
The story was really about this year's inaugural poem (only the fifth). It be composed by one "Richard Blanco".  I have to admit, I'd never heard of him before.

He's the first Latino poet to win this honor, and the youngest.
Oh, and he's gay.

So, being the curious superficial soul that I am, I promptly did an image search of him...and well....
I can't say the snippets of his work I've read are moving me, but, hello!... this picture is.
Hubba, huh?
