Christmas time in New Orleans

I notice he doesn't mention the need to drag out the short pants again.
 I guess he couldn't figure out a rhyme for that.

recent random randomness...

The past few days I've been blessed by being able to visit with friends.

I tried for like a whole minute to figure a clever way to organize these photos into a cohesive narrative with a message and a theme, but...um.... I'm just too lazy.

Sorry.

Instead, here's a photo dump of badly taken cell phone photos.
Enjoy!

Anyway, I was fortunate enough to spend the 4th with the ever-charming Mr. Peenee and the completely wonderful Diane. Delightful!

First up are these books found by kismet on Independence Night. They were nestled in a pile of  strays left on some poor soul's stoop (no doubt being evicted for inability to pay her rent)  Finally... at last.... I'll now know what to do with my life.
At Goodwill, Diane's legendary thrift store mojo led me to this.  Some sort of handmade snow dowager.  Is there anything sadder than a widowed snow-woman?

Aaaand, why yes, apparently there is something sadder.

Yesterday, one of my best friends, Michael, unexpectedly came into town.  Naturally, we went record shopping. He bought some.  I did not. Frankly, I don't have the energy to be dropping needles on records.  It's all too exhausting.  I did, however, snap a few pictures.

I found these two in the "beautiful manly hair sings" section.
Speaking of " beautiful manly hair sings"

Afterward,  we had a drink at the newly renovated St. Roch Market, which seems to have been turned into a very yuppie food court, but that's not necessarily a criticism.
I had something called the "Mary Pickford".  Because, I mean, of course I did.  Michael had the manlier (ha!) drink (some sort of mongrel margarita with black pepper and salt around the rim)

We took a walk to the newly opened Crescent Park, which seemed like less a "park" than a really nice open air space.  This is a view from the walkway to it

And here's a view of the city from the "park"

If You Were Born Today

Today I stumbled upon
 Time Magazine's "Find Out What Your Name Would Be If You Were Born Today"
name-generator
It takes the relative popularity of your name in the year you were born and matches it with a name of the same popularity for various decades.

To my horror, apparently my name today would be the abomination:
"Kayden"
 Kayden? WTF

This sounds like something one of the Kardashians is probably going to name her 3rd grandchild.

Anywho, here's a list of the other decades, none of which are terribly inspiring, but all
better than Kayden:
2000s =Mario
1990s =Hector
Hector
1980s=Reginald

1970s= Greg

1960s=Kerry

1950s=Herman
 ... Gwynne played the role of Herman Munster on the TV comedy The Munsters
1940s=Sidney

1930s=Oliver

1920s=Clifton
 Clifton Webb
1910s=Dave

1900s=Franklin
 Franklin.jpg

Thankfully, it seems my name in the1890s would be
the much sexier "Sylvester"
Yes!
At last a name I can get behind.

St. Sade's Day

Today, it seems, is the feast day of Our Lady of Perpetual Cool, St. Sade Adu herself.

Seems 56 or so years ago, she wafted down from heaven to make the world a little bit better.
(Thanks to fellow worshiper, Thom, for the reminder)

I think if a gun were held to my head and I had to choose but one of her songs as my favorite (horror!), I just might have to pick this one.
There are others, less obvious ones, but if I had to choose, I would have to choose this one, from the songs that first seduced my little ears.

The video is also a favorite of mine, so soignee it makes me ache. Good God, but I want to live whenever and wherever she is in this video. How do I get there???

Anyway, here it is.  I'll be playing it tonight like a cassingle you have to wind back up with a pencil because it's been played it too many times

you and me

Just saw this Tom Ford commercial over at mistress maddie's lovely blog and liked the song used in it so much I sought it out.
That's how I found this little "unofficial" video, which was even lovelier.

Heard this on the radio today, and liked it.

Love will (not) keep us together

I don't know if you all have heard the terrible news yet...
but frankly I am devastated.
Devastated I tell you!
Is nothing real? Nothing true? Nothing sacred?!

Anyways, in honor of a muskrat love gone bad,
I offer you a few select pages of my very own Captain and Tennille fan book.

I found this treasure a while back at a book fair.
It was a castoff from an elementary school library.
I snatched it up for my dear friend Michael before anyone else could get their filthy hands on it.

It resides with him  now, hopefully in a crystal reliquary, illuminated by holy candles.

It was part of the "Rock'n Pop Stars" series, apparently.

I'm sure that "Charley Pride" volume must fetch top dollar on ebay, right?

Sadly, the words of this classic will taunt us forevermore with their tawdry hypocrisy:

A Brief Memo from Fabulon...

art

Last night's theme was particularly artistic. We spent the first part of the evening at the Marigny Opera House (an atmospherically derelict old church) hearing the beautiful Vespers of 1610 by Monteverdi....
....after which we retried to the...um... ever so tragique le Roundup, a musty old gay "cowboy" bar,  inhabited by the demi-monde  ( by which I mean tranny hookers, of course). I was too shy terrified of getting cut by a razor from a weave to take any photos of the lovely ladies there.  But I did snap a photo of this lovely work of art (drag amardillo?). Thanks to the lack of a door on the toilets, one could see (without trying) even more art: black tranny hookers in spandex peeing backwards. Performance art, baby.

De Gorgeous!

Today is the fabulous Lady Miss Kier's birthday. Her fiftieth (!)
Busy as I am, I would feel remiss if I let it go by without celebrating somehow.
So, tonight I have wall-to-wall Deee-Lite rocking the kitchen as I do my dishes. Anyway, I've always thought she's never quite gotten the glory that's due to her.

And, as an extra added bonus, here is one of my favorite (not played often enough) Deee Lite tracks:

Beyoncebowl

This past week has been, well, kind of hellish....for several reasons.

Two of more minor ones are thus:
One: I'm sick.
Two: Traffic.
It's has been ridiculous as we here in the city prepare for You-Know-What on Sunday.
Oh, and it's Carnival.
Insane.

Just getting to the market to get some dinner and home cost me like an hour stuck in traffic.

Anywho...in honor of the impending Beyoncebowl, here's one of Destiny's Child's legendary classics, redone into something actually listenable and soothing:

who knows, maybe she'll even "sing" this one.

A night with Miss Lupone

So I just got back from seeing the fabulous Miss Patti Lupone (accompanied by Seth Rudetsky.)

Now, except for maybe the anal sex I once had backstage with Judy Garland in drag while quoting Oscar Wilde, this was the gayest thing I've ever done.

I'm not a "theatre" gay by any stretch. Sorry. I missed that gene.
But my friend Dennis asked me to go, and, although it meant staying up late on a school night, I said, "sure, what the hell."
Anyway, she was fabulous. Very funny....and enthusiastic. There was no phoning it in with her.
 Nosirree.

 She brought down the house with hits from Evita, Les Miserables, Gypsy...all the hits, I guess...and a bunch of other shows I'd never heard of.

 I would have taken a photo, but I didn't want this to happen.

Ok, so maybe I would have LOVED for this to have happened.
Just not to me, you know.

Actually one of the best parts of her patter was about cell phone and camera abuse at the theater.
She's right. If you can't divorce yourself from technology for a few hours in a theater, then you've got a problem, don't you think? She even performed this song...almost as enthusiastically as she did back in the day on the Merv Griffin(!) show.
