square joy

This past week I've been ignorning my body and overworking myself. Yesterday, I finally succumbed to getting sick.
I decided to take today off, feeling miserable.

One of the few things I've found that gives temporary relief is hot tea, so I've brewed a big pot of it.

The other night I went absolutely wild and bought some sugar cubes at the grocery.
(I'm slowly turning into a dowager. I can't wait for my monocle to arrive from Lenscrafters.)

Anyway, an older lady with whom I'm acquainted had offered me sugar cubes in a porcelain sugar bowl (with tongs!) a few months ago, and the cuteness of it completely infected me. I've been wanting some ever since (the tongs just might be next, someone stop me!)

Of course, being a philistine, I'm eating the things like candy, straight out of the box. It's obnoxious.

But given enough boredom, I may get around to building one of these:

Yes, it's the Mormon Temple in sugar cubes (Shouldn't it be salt?)

Of course, I might just have to have a bit of fun with a dousing of rum and a match with mine, but it does look pretty, doesn't it?

Rather than stop you, I've started looking through ebay for some sugar tongs for you.

I'm sorry you're feeling poorly. Maybe you shuold stop eating the cubes and start drinking the rum. I'd stay away from the matches if I were you, though.

Miss J hopes your health returns soon.

Mr. Jason almost makes Miss J want to get out that box of teacups and saucers Mr. J's grandma gave her and do something with them.

I'd say get your tongs from tiffanys.

Nothing like understated refined elegance, with a huge honking diamond on one end.

People really should start using sugar cubes more - people like me. It would give me the opportunity to ask 'One lump or two?' which I've always wanted to do. They're also simultaneously a food product and a crafting product. How many things can you say that about? I'm gonna get me some sugar cubes! And some tongs.

It's not "dowager" it's French! I use sugar cubes year round, but not the perfect square ones pictures, the rough-hewn French style, thank you.

thanks all...and thanks to FP and Jim, I guess I now need look for tongs and some rough hewn French cubes too. My cube insanity is spiraling out of control now.
Maybe if I chew the edges off my American ones, I can pretend they're French?

I fell under the spell of sugar cubes years ago and have long since progresed to tongs, a silver tea set and ritual afternoon tea whenever possible....

Hope you feel better soon, I'm still battling my own cold as well.

I didn't know people still used real sugar. The only sweetner I have had in the past ten years comes from a blue or yellow packet.

The tongs sound so gay...and now I want them too!

I buy La Perruche rough cut sugar cubes from a local food wholesaler. I found them on Amazon.com at about $10 a box (must buy two at a time).

Look around your gourmet food emporium and see if you can find them locally.

How gay am I? Well, I buy both white and brown sugar cubes for the visual.

I remember my grandmother, The Scootersville Dowager, always used sugar cubes and tongs. I thought how ritzy. Still do.

Get the tongs.

Oh, honey, I hope you get well soon. Have one of the houseboys serve you a proper tea (with sugar cubes and tongs) in the nude, and you'll feel like a new man.
