I just bought Janelle Monae's newest cd, Archandroid, which is, for lack of a better word, a "concept album."
God bless her.
I love how varied it is.
This seems to be on its way to being the single, but it's not my favorite.
This is one of my favorites:
I'm not sure, but I have a suspicion that dear little Janelle's
batshit crazy, and I love it.

It occurs to us that perhaps we have let down the younger generation of
ladystars. We spent years talking about what constitutes a poor choice for
a talk...

OUTSTANDING! thank you for this tip, sugar! what an artist. xoxox
Thanks for posting this song ("57821")--I'm loving it. I like "Tightrope," and although I don't think it's her greatest song or video, watching the video makes me really wish I could dance.
Her craziness is, for me, the icing on the cake.
I was going to post this yesterday!
Great Minds......Think up better stuff like rocket science but you know what I mean.
Call me daft, because I've never heard of Janelle...but I know what I'll be downloading next time I visit iTunes! Thank you! (I just loooove guerilla marketing!) And I find it always a plus to listen to the opinions of the younger generation. You definitely have your finger on the pulse of all things new and creative.
It should be noted if you like Tightrope that none of the other songs on the album sound remotely like it.
I'm still giving it a chance and I can appreciate the artistry, but uh... not sure it's enjoyable to me :)
I hate to see raw talent wasted on a batshit crazy vision.
Interesting, I've never heard of her. Love the dancing in Tightrope.
Oh, Jason, you keep me young. I'm pretty out of touch with anything that was recorded after 1991, and most comfortable with obscure chantoozies from circa 1957, so this was a pleasant find. I downloaded her first EP and then this new concept album on the strength of these clips, your recommendation, and the other good press I found with a little Googling. (But I still don't get Lady Gaga.)
Jason!
I went online today to look for her album and saw you posted about her! What luck!
From what I read, Janelle did indeed have a troubled childhood.
I prefer "Tightrope" over the second song you posted though.
Am I the only one who thinks she sounds a bit like Beyonce? That's NOT a bad thing either!
