A Very Fanny Christmas

"Mincemeat, The Cinderella of Christmas Cooking."
I'm promptly incorporating "dour little things" and "lashings of mincemeat" into my vocabulary as soon as I see the opportunity.

I love how she has "Sarah, my dear Sarah" in a housecoat, while she is in full drag.
Role model.

Marla! with special guest stars Diana Ross and Michael Jackson

Why yes, it is a Marla Gibbs doll (as 227's "sharp-tongued inner city resident Mary Jenkins")!

In its original box.

At the public library.
For some reason, however, they wouldn't let me check it out.

God speed, sweet Jan

I don't know about you all, but how I loved me some Jan Hooks! Truly saddened to hear about her passing today. I'd been wondering where she was just not long ago. Here's just one of my favorite characters of hers:

Nothing could be Ina....

So, being home in the early afternoons for the past few weeks, I've been able to see lots of "The  Barefoot Contessa".

Is it wrong that I want to be Ina Garten?

I mean really----all day cooking delicious food, wearing giant denim shirts..... hobnobbing with hot gay men, amidst hydrangeas in the Hamptons???

(To paraphrase Ina), how great is that?

Speaking of which, the other day, I happened to catch the episode when, her friend, T. R., shows up to learn how to make love to me a steak dinner. You know the one?
 Good heavens.

I'd be more than happy to show him the "good vanilla."
That's all I'm saying.

I Dream of Weeny

So what am I doing on this scintillating Friday night, you ask?

Never mind, I'm going to tell you anyway.

Somehow, I find myself sucked into a black hole of watching what seems like an endless loop of I Dream of Jeannie. How does this happen?

I don't think I've seen an episode of I Dream of Jeannie since I was ten.
Seems I haven't missed much.
Frankly, I never liked it nearly as much as Bewitched.
Witches trump Genies any day in my book.

The only thing that really interested me about it was Jeannie's bottle.

But you knew that already, right?

(Oh, and apparently Jeannie is right on trend, since "Radiant Orchid" is Pantone's color of 1967 2013  )

Anyway, who pops up on the screen but "Amanda Bellows", Dr. Bellow's chic trophy wife... you remember, the one with frosted hair and frosted voice.
Love her.

I do a bit of research to find out that she is played by one "Emmaline Henry" who sadly died in 1979 at age 50.

What surprises me most, however, is that Dr. Bellows has a wife at all.
I mean really.

Now back when I was eating Ding Dongs after school, watching IDoJ in re-re-reruns, somehow it completely flew over my little head ....or maybe it wormed its way into my little psyche, I'm not sure which.....but it's clear to my adult ears that dear old Dr. Bellows is gay gay gay.
Did I mention he must be gay?

Sure enough, a cursory search of Wikipedia turns up this nugget:

"Rorke was "unashamedly gay", as Jeannie co-star Barbara Eden stated in her 2011 biography Jeannie Out of the Bottle. She commented that Rorke "and his partner, Justus Addiss, lived together for many years in Studio City, along with their menagerie of dogs." He and Addiss would often invite the cast over for parties.[1]  Eden described Hayden as a "prince" who was a good friend of all and always managed to keep up the spirits of the I Dream of Jeannie cast, often in difficult circumstances.[1]"

Yep.

Praise Dalida!

Thank the heavens the satellite signal to Fabulon has been relocated,
the rabbit ears are freshly tinfoiled
and Thombeau is back on the air at his fabulous Redundant Variety Hour!

There's no way I can possibly choose just one clip to show you what to expect, but this one is a fave.

Do yourselves a favor and click the tab for "Italy"...or Florence Henderson...or both if you're kinky.

I keep seeing this commercial...

over and over...and I have to say, despite myself, I like it.

Of course, they are pandering to my demographic (or something)...I'm not too proud to admit it.

I mean I don't like it enough to spend money on a Kindle or anything, but if there's ever a sale on gay husbands, hey, let me know.

Happy 1913!

Well, I don't know how you all spent your New Year's eve, but I spent mine at Downton Abbey.
I'm only, like what, a decade or something late, right?
But whatever.
John had the boxed set from a friend, so I figured why not? It's cold outside anyway.

Somehow I'd never managed to see it, despite the countless commands of "you must!" from just about everyone I know.
I'm a late adopter to everything....even life.
Again I digress.

Anyway, I sat still, for the most part entertained, for 6 hours or so....and then went to bed.

A few unsolicited thoughts:

1. Why'd they have to make the gay one "evil" (or evil-ish)?
I mean really.
Not that I don't enjoy an evil gay, don't get me wrong.
It just strikes me the wrong way. Of course if they'd made him the chaste good boy, I'd be complaining here too, so I guess I'm a hypocrite.  Still.
     2. It's a bit Dynasty, isn't it?
         I mean, I don't mean that as a complaint...at all....but well....it just is.
3. the owner of the dvds posited the theory that DA and GWTW had more than a few parallels (Lady Mary being a sort of English Scarlett O'Hara). When I got to thinking about it, I think he might be onto something.  I mean that cook, Miss Patmore (?) seemed very Aunt Pittypat to me at least.

4. Charlie Cox! Oh dear. I had no idea he was in this.  I've had a crush on him since forever. I feel like I discovered him, even though I might be alone.  (Heck, I've been talking about him all the way back in 2007 and here again in 2009    and here again
in 2010 )
Anyway, I was hooked as soon as I saw him in the first episode as the Duke of Earl or somewhatever.
Then when he and gay Thomas went on into a bit of full on semi Mauriceing. Omg...that was almost as titillating for me as watching Dame Maggie deliver a withering glance. Hot.

(oh, and a quick googling turned up this...thanks to his post DA "fame". Praise Jesus for the internet)
5. Keeping with the theme of cute boys, the lovely Turkish gentleman looked more than a bit like a friend of mine.  (I know, right?!)

6. The Duke and the Dead Turk notwithstanding, I have to admit to hoping for a bit more eye candy, since the others leave me a bit cold. I don't know about y'all, but Thomas and Cousin Matthew are just not doing anything for me,sorry.
7. Yes, I'm just that shallow.
