thought for the day

Things I did *not* get for my birthday.

A Hello Kitty mobile
Winter mittens

The Poseidon Adventure action figure set
The LV waffle maker
The seven deadly sins rings
One of these
My very own unicorn. (I'm tired of having to share)

mysterious ways

Today, at the library, I picked up this slender tome from the stacks:
Because....well, I want to know,
dammit.

only to find a holy card of St. Francis marking the chapter titled
"You're a Slut".

It's mah Birfday

So to celebrate my birthday, John graciously brought me to dinner at my favorite Indian restaurant. Lo and behold, when we got there we ran into the ubiquitous film shoot. Trailers everywhere. It really is Hollywood South down here, y'all!

We thought the place might not be open, but thankfully it was. After dinner my nosey self had to investigate. Of course.
They'd converted the store next door into a replica of a Woolworth's from the mid 50s it seems. Very cool. The extras were milling about dressed in period garb.

Boyscouts with confederate flags!   They didn't seem to like that I was taking pictures. I was gently reprimanded by one of the crew. Whatever. How often are you going to get the chance to photograph boyscouts with confederate flags?!

Ok, good point.
Afterward, we went over to the Creole Creamery for ice cream. It used to be a McKenzie's bakery. This will mean nothing to you non New Orleanians, but it holds a special place in our hearts. I love that they kept the old sign.

.
The Green fairy beckoned...Absinthe and Valrohna chocolate with candied orange peel Sounds like an episode of "Chopped" doesn't it?
Once upon a time, Rosemary Peach probably worked at McKenzie's, right? She was the one with the henna rinse bouffant, and the slight facial hair, remember?  Well, I like to think so. The Summer Ale with Citrus and Coriander sounded interesting, but I didn't get it.
Instead I got the "Oaxaca Chocolate" (with mezcal, allegedly) instead.  John got the White peach with St. Germain and a scoop of the Green Fairy, which was surprisingly good.

Still in Florida...

Trying to relax...
Despite this. Imagine waking up to see this little imp staring at you in the dark...
just waiting to suck out your soul.

Reason to love New Orleans #4590

I wonder, where else but New Orleans can you be trapped in traffic with a jazz funeral in front of you and an icecream truck behind you on your way to eat Pho in the back of a bar?

recent baking experiments

When I'm bored and anxious, I find myself baking.
When I'm even more bored and anxious, I find myself eating...this is not a good combination.

(How is it that you can be both bored and anxious anyway? I mean you'd think the anxiety would occupy your mind and cancel out the boredom, wouldn't you? But um....nope.)

Aaaaaanyway, two of these were pretty good...the other not so much.
Whatever.
I will not be dissuaded.
Peach crostada
nectarine almond tart (ok, but not so good)
my version of the fig and almond mascarpone tart (found on the lovely Jill's blog )

A Plague of Parrots (redux)

So next week, some friends and I will be going back to the lovely sugar white sands of the Florida gulf coast.
It's been a few years since we've been. I'm looking forward to it, but  I don't really know what we'll find there. I like the element of surprise.

But let's take a look back at the condo in which we stayed last time, shall we?

Nothing screams "Summer fun" like blood red walls and iron crucifixes, right?
Making it even more festive was a jungle of dusty fake foliage, swarming with monkeys, parrots...and turtles.

Magic Eye Curtains in the living room. If you stare at it long enough you can see Satan riding one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse....and a unicorn. You see it too, right?

Reading material in the master suite, decoratively propped between two monkey-reading-a book bookends. Note the Walmart stickers.

Stain on master bed. I'm thinking someone got a bit too excited reading The Preacher's Wife and had an "accident".

One of the three blenders corpses. We killed two in two days. R.I.P. We're going for four this year.

Turtle on a swing. Hanging over toilet.
Imagine walking in to this at 4 am
More turtles, a veritable tower of turtles. Turtles on top of turtles.
I gave up counting the turtles and monkeys. The birds (28) and mirrors (14), however, I did.
Growth on wall.

Monkey playing piano while his brothers read Lonestar Cinderella. Wonder what he's playing.

Decapitated parrots in kitchen. Four of the 28 birds in the condo. Twenty nine if you count the towel swan.
