"I have okra..."

One of the joys of living in my neighborhood are the sounds I get to hear, from the church bells every morning to the ice cream trucks to this new and wonderful one:

For the past few weeks, each afternoon, he's been slowly tooling around in his hand painted car, selling his vegetables and singing his hypnotic song.

I'm glad he's got wheels and a loudspeaker.

When I was little, fruit and vegetable vendors still wandered the city on foot, carrying baskets. I remember lying in bed in our house on Arabella, listening to the blackberry lady make her slow way up the street:

Blaaaaaaaaack...berrieeeeees.....
Blackberries!

I love that. Wish there were more of that again in the US. When I was growing up in Asia, there were vendors singing about their wares all day. There was one man who would sing (in Chinese) something that sounded to me like "I haaaave no one to plaaay with!" Never found out what he was selling.

Way up in the frosty north where I live, I would love a truck to drive by and hear "I have salt, I have snow tires, I have portable heaters". Sigh! Enjoy and get you something green to eat.

Back here in South Africa (at the poor parts)we have a few different vans that come around on different days of the week with their loudspeakers and hypnotic songs selling anything ranging from veggies, shoes to toilet paper.. I find it hilarious the exact same thing exists somewhere else too!
