The article is less than provocative, however.
But it did get me to thinking.
Growing up, I remember my mother having a few celebrity crushes, none of which really ever made much sense. For some reason, she was enamoured of Tom Jones.
She had all of his albums, and his hirsute chest always seemed to be following me around the house....like a puppy.

Then there was Martin Sheen. Whereas she thankfully gave up Tom Jones years ago, she still maintains a crush on Martin. Can't say I blame her either.

And John Derek (whom she never failed to mention "had been beautiful" before presumably he met Bo and everything went downhill). He seems to have been a crush from her teenage years.

What's even more ironic is that my mother used to make fun of her own mother for her (my grandmother's) crush on none other than 70s pretty boy John Davidson (whatever happened to him, I wonder?) My grandmother had a taste for the young pretty ones, I guess.

So, is my mother just a raging boycrazy hussy, or did your mother have crushes too
(not that those two are mutually exclusive questions)?

Oh, Grandma liked the twinkies, didn't she?
My mother and I would have never talked about such things, but I do know that she "liked" Glen Campbell, Burt Reynolds, and several country stars.
Burt Reynolds and Tom Jones are in the same furry category. Ick. Gold chains on a hairy chest. Kind of reminds me of Geromy's '70s party.
So did your mother tell your father about these crushes? Who's HE like?
I do know my mother read Penthouse Letters. Not that that has much to do with this.
Tom Jones. The car never left the garage without "What's New, Pussycat?" blaring from an 8-track cassette.
I hid my head in shame.
BTW: John Davidson did not age too well per my last Googling. I was doing research for my 'Seventies stars I would suck' best-seller.
By the way, I don't know John Derek, but your mother was right. He was beautiful. At least in that photo.
I had a feeling he hadn't Michael.
Too bad.
And Jason...I don't think my father could name a celebrity, let alone did he have a crush on one.
My mother was never one to be discreet about much of anything, so everyone knew it....not just me.
What's funny is how she'd make fun of others, like her sister's love of Elvis or her mother's crush on John Davidson.
OMG! Tom Jones is one of the reasons I'm gay! When I was a kid, he was on tv every week and I couldn't get enough of him. He had a very strong "animal magnetism". And tight pants. Very sexual. I must have been 8 or so...I didn't know if I wanted to BE him, or HAVE him.
What can I say? I'm twisted. The other reason I'm gay? Twiggy.
Yes, Tom and Twiggy...a fatal cocktail of gay-ness that.
My mother never misses a James Garner movie and then she reminds us that if she had not married our father she would have married James Garner. As the 1980's wore on she decided to become, "Mrs. Tom Selnick." I told her if she was going to marry him she should at least get his name right. A few years ago while on a family vacation, my parents snuck off to see the movie “The Notebook” and after they got home she said she was so relieved she didn't marry James Garner because he hasn't aged as well as our father.
Mrs. Tom Selnick?
Love it!
honey, my mother and I SHARED a crush on Tom Jones. O so twisted.
Mama Janey was a bit of a hag, without even realizing: Johnny Mathis and Rock Hudson were crushes. She too liked Mr. Jones, as well as Perry Como and Neil Diamond. Mama loves the crooners.
Substitute Knight Rider's David Hasselhoff for Thombeau's Tom Jones, and delete Twiggy from the equation, and our stories are almost identical. ;)
What is it with moms and Tom Jones, anyway? My mom was totally into him back in the day, and then moved on to Tom, uh, Selnick. And Julio Iglesias.
Silly Monkey, glad we have so much in common! :-)
